Empirical Modelling for Educational Technology
نویسنده
چکیده
The potential merits of Empirical Modelling (EM) as a new approach to generating software for educational use are examined. Connections between EM and the learning process are discussed. EM is proposed as a method of dealing with knowledge that is gained through experience of interaction with artefacts. The philosophical implications of this thesis are considered, with particular reference to the work of William James (1842-1910). The relationship between EM and current research on multiuser spread-sheets and agent-oriented modelling is also described. A practical agenda for future applications of EM to education is outlined.

An Empirical Modelling Approach to Educational Technology in Learning about Business
Continuous change in technology and the awareness of a new approach for education led to a ‘revolution in education’ in the past. Educational Technology (ET) is the proposed solutions for these problems as a result of rethinking education. One implementation of ET is using Empirical Modelling (EM) techniques. Learning through interaction with the computer plays an important role in thinking abo...
متن کاملInvestigating Cognitive Artifacts as part of the Human Computer Interface and the Role of Empirical Modelling in the Teaching
This paper seeks to investigate whether Empirical modelling can play a key role in cognitive artifacts. It will examine the notion of human computer interaction and how the process of cognitive artifact formation occurs. This is to investigate how the process can be facilitated, or show areas where possible investigation could occur using empirical modelling. It will also seek to examine the po...
متن کاملNumerical modelling of the underground roadways in coal mines– uncertainties caused by use of empirical-based downgrading methods and in situ stresses
Numerical modelling techniques are not new for mining industry and civil engineering projects anymore. These techniques have been widely used for rock engineering problems such as stability analysis and support design of roadways and tunnels, caving and subsidence prediction, and stability analysis of rock slopes. Despite the significant advancement in the computational mechanics and availabili...
متن کاملNumerical Modelling of Dynamic Compaction in Dry Sandy Soils for Determination of Effective Print Spacing
Dynamic compaction (DC) is a widely used soil improvement method in dry and/or saturated soils. The design of DC treatment is usually carried out based on the past experiences and empirical relations. In order to clarify the ambiguities in DC processes, numerical modeling of DC in dry granular soils has been considered using a dynamic finite element code. Using the developed model, two design c...
متن کاملDescriptive and Predictive Modelling Techniques for Educational Technology
Data-driven models are the basis of all adaptive systems. Adaption to the user requires that the models are driven from real user data. However, in educational technology real data is seldom used, and all general-purpose learning environments are predefined by the system designers. In this thesis, we analyze how the existing knowledge discovery methods could be utilized in implementing adaptivi...
